Ontario Veterinary College Department of Population Medicine Faculty Retreat

On June 13th, 2018 ACER Consulting’s Drs. Steven Roche and Dan Shock delivered a full day faculty facilitation workshop at the University of Guelph Turfgrass Institute. The purpose of the retreat was to engage faculty members of the Department of Population Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College, which is a leader in animal health and productivity, food safety, and zoonoses. The faculty retreat acted as a useful means for engaging faculty in constructive discussions about the current and future vision. ACER’s facilitation workshop was designed to encourage open communication and strategic thinking to map out the future direction of department initiatives. Key areas of discussion were the department’s mission statement, their five-year strategic plan, and the department’s graduate seminar course.

A two-phase approach was used. The ACER team administered a survey beforehand to give faculty members a voice on pre-determined topics, and areas that would be helpful to discuss during the workshop. The workshop itself included facilitation of staff discussion, group brainstorming, discussion on departmental strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT), and a ‘think-pair-share’ approach. The department is working to attract high quality graduate students and enhance their skillset/experience, further develop their One Health initiative, improve technology, influence societal change, and enhance workplace culture.
The department is now working with ACER’s workshop report on key outcomes to finalize a revised mission statement, and solidify a new five-year strategic plan for the department.
