Assessing the Value of Registered Veterinary Technicians
January 2018 marked the start of an exciting new project with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT), a governing body that regulates and maintains the professional standards of veterinary technicians and advocates for their role in providing exceptional animal care and welfare in both clinical practice, industry, and the community. Their overarching mission is to advocate, regulate, and elevate the role of Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) in Ontario. The focus of the collaborative effort between ACER and OAVT is focused on exploring and quantifying the value RVTs bring to veterinary practice over non-credentialed or on-the-job trained personnel.
Together, the OAVT and ACER developed and are in the process of administering an online survey that targeted small animal clinicians and/or practice owners in Ontario. The survey aims to gather information on what roles RVTs have within a clinical setting, and how their work contributes economic value to the business, for example value-added services (e.g. wellness programs, nutritional consultation, etc.), increasing the efficiency of the team, providing exceptional patient care, and promoting veterinary-patient-client relationships and retention. The survey is still ongoing and will be completed in Fall, 2018.

Update: In June of 2019, Dr. Dan Shock, together with Rory Demetrioff of the OAVT, travelled to Bromont, Quebec to discuss the findings of this analysis at the Canadian Animal Health Institute’s Annual General Meeting. They discussed their findings of the study, that an RVT can generate up to $78,000 in revenue per veterinarian in a small animal clinic!
