Improving Cow Comfort, Animal Welfare, and Profitability From the Foot Up

ACER was involved in the development and implementation of a hands-on workshop on practical ways for trimmers to work with their dairy producer clients to improve lameness in their herds. The goal of the workshop was to help improve dairy cattle welfare and producer profitability through a proactive approach. The workshop consisted of 4 rotating training situations that were situated in separate locations of the dairy facility. The situations included; Practical tips on Breaking the Digital Dermatitis cycle, Locomotion scoring and lameness, Effective use of footbaths, and Effective hoof trimming.

Over 200 dairy farmers from across Manitoba made it out to the workshop, spending the day learning from one another and a number of scientific experts and dairy producer advisors working across Canada.
