University of Minnesota Communication Training

The University of Minnesota (UMN) College of Veterinary Medicine has a series of communication workshops they offer to veterinary students. ACER Consulting delivered a 4 hour session for 3rd year veterinary students.

The session was comprised of a combination of lecture and interactive activities, where lecture topics included:

  • Understanding on-farm adoption, motivation and decision-making
  • Common barriers and preferences to communication and adoption
  • Communication skills in clinical practice
  • Motivational interviewing to improve client discussions

 

Interactive activities used during the session included:

  • Think, pair, share exercise on communication pitfalls
  • Simulated client discussions
  • Preparing a client-centred approach; collaborative communication planning
